Atlas Shrugged — & Awakened in Me a Greater Desire to Produce

One thought, sparked by a book I just finished, made me an additional $80,000 last night.

I devour a couple books a month. While there are many genres I enjoy, I’m always on the lookout for a good business book.

Although it certainly has its flaws, I just finished a book that will remain in my top five for some time. It’s a philosophical novel, a genre I’ve never really heard of, let alone explored.

The book is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. While its 1,200-pages of fine print is a little intimidating, at times the book was impossible to put down.

atlas Atlas Shrugged    & Awakened in Me a Greater Desire to ProduceThe plot is a comparison between capitalism and socialism. The story takes place in America after the turn of the century when major captains of industry begin to emerge.

These powerful producers, who activate and mobilize the economy, are viewed by many Americans as greedy, selfish and exploitive.

The poor, self deceived and misled by political power-mongers and bureaucrats, rally for a welfare state and persecute the producers for their business success, using the force of law to take the wealth created by producers and give it to those who hadn’t rightfully earned it.

While the book is fictional, the battle between the consumer mindset and the producer mindset is real in every individual, and this battle plays out in politics, government, business — virtually every aspect of society.

People caught in the consumer condition struggle to earn more. And although they desire to have more, they are often the most critical of more successful people.

The part of the book that I found deeply satisfying was the twist on the beloved theme of Robin Hood.

In contrast to the typical rendition, Rand portrays Robin Hood as one of the worst bandits, since he represents stealing from the creators of economy and giving to the undeserving looters.

I shared this with my father-in-law Matt, who told me that he grew up with the Marriotts, the owners of the massive hotel chain.

As a teenager he spoke of the Marriotts maliciously because they employed so many people at minimum wage. He wondered if they were so successful, then why couldn’t they pay more to their employees.

Later, as he was going through an MBA program, Matt recalled how gaining a better knowledge of market forces and supply and demand he came to honor what the Marriotts had created.

Rand also argues a concept previously foreign to me called ethical egoism, which argues against altruism. The idea is to be in business to do what you love and to make money — and as much money as possible.

If you truly have a needed product and your passion drives you to produce, your engaged self-interest will help you maximize what you can produce and earn.

Get over the limiting mindset that making money is a sin. Your ability to produce, earn and create value for others is part of your nature. Embrace it to increase your production.

Be proud of what you are creating, and learn to structure your business endeavors in a way that the value you create comes back to you. Instead of creating 10 times the value for the marketplace in exchange for what you receive, how about a fair trade?

Don’t diminish your worth out of fear or a false sense of altruism.

Most people don’t have a frame of reference for creation; they don’t even know what it is, let alone how to do it.

I encourage people to read this book to peer into the minds of powerful men and women that are the engines of productive economies.

I have learned so much from studying and examining such a rare mind. Just reading this book has assisted me in becoming a much more powerful creator.

In fact, I am writing this because last night I produced an additional $80,000 with a single principle I learned from the book. I’ll give more details on this later.

I invite you to become a powerful creator. Creators enjoy wealth and influence, two of the greatest aspects of a full life.
